Chapter 19

Five Eyes

Three Hours Later

McLean, Virginia

CIA Headquarters

Alexandra Hardy studied her watch—9:59. Her cell phone in her hand, she sat at her desk, her eyes never straying from the timepiece. 10:00. She tapped out a number and put her mobile to her right cheek.

Ringing.

She swallowed. Come on.

More ringing.

Pick up the damn—

The call connected.

She leaned forward in her chair and put her elbows on the desk.

A man cleared his throat. “Hell—” he coughed. “Hello?”

“Senator Farrow. I’m so sorry to call you this late, but I felt it was important that we speak.”

“Who’s...Director Hardy? Is that you?”

“Yes. Forgive me. I should’ve told you who I was.” She heard rustling on the line. “Can we talk, sir?”

Farrow spoke softly. “Give me a minute.”

Hardy heard more rustling then the gentle ‘click’ of a closing door a few seconds later.

“Okay,” his voice got a little louder, “what’s this all about, Alexandra?”

“Sir, I believe an entity hostile to our nation might have compromised our flu shot stockpile with an unknown virus.”

“What?”

“Since you have a lot of pull in these matters, I was hoping you could use that influence.”

“To do what, exactly? And how do you know this, anyway?”

“I’m not at liberty to discuss the details of an ongoing mission, sir.”

“I see,” said Farrow. Seconds passed. “And what are you asking of me?”

“Stop the legislation on the second round of flu shots—just long enough for my people to conduct a deeper investigation into this.”

“Director Hardy, I’m sure I don’t need to inform you that we are in the middle of a crisis that is affecting millions.”

“I understand that, sir, but—”

“This legislation you speak of has the potential to end that crisis.”

“I know sir, but—”

“Now, I realize you folks over there at the CIA have to keep your secrets. But until you can give me specific details, I’m afraid I really must press on and do everything in my power to stop this tragedy.”

Hardy cringed at the man’s southern drawl. He had seamlessly slipped into ‘campaign mode.’

“Is there anything else you’d care to share with me, Ms. Hardy,” a tick, “such as your information sources or the supposed persons or organizations involved in this atrocious act of terror you speak of?”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t comment on any ongo—”

“Ongoing missions. Yes. I heard you the first time. If that is all, I’d like to get back to bed now.”

“That-that’s all, sir. Thank you for your time.”

“Goodnight, Ms. Hardy.” The senator ended the call.

Hardy clicked off, picked up her desk phone, and dialed. Seconds later, she asked, “Did you get it?”

“We did, Ms. Hardy,” said a man’s voice on the line.

“Excellent. I want you to trace all calls coming and going from that number.”

“Yes, Ma’am.”

“Record everything and send me updates every half hour. Is that clear?”

“Yes, Ma’am. Until further notice, my office has been instructed to work closely with you and your agency.”

While the CIA was forbidden to spy on American citizens, that did not stop foreign agencies from spying on them and reporting back to the US Government. Thanks
